5 good reasons to visit the SHOW OFF exhibition at the MAK

15.08.2020

August 25

The exhibition “SHOW OFF. Austrian Fashion Designer” is currently shown in the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna. The focus is on Austrian fashion designers, from the 1980s until today. You experience a special kind of visit, not only a journey through time through the domestic fashion scene, but for the first time you get a feeling for training and studying in the field of fashion and design.

FashionTouri took a look at the exhibition and picked five reasons why SHOW OFF is definitely worth a visit!

1. The Red-Carpet-Moment

Admitted: Who of us has never dreamed of a walk on the red carpet? Standing in the flash of lightning from the cameras and waving at the paparazzi with perfectly manicured nails? A dream that can become reality with the exhibition at the MAK.

The canvases to the left and right of the carpet provide amazing information about famous (guest) professors in the fashion class of the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. You will learn, among other things, the discovery of great fashion designers and revolutionary teaching methods.

The exhibition mentions fashion giants like Fred Adlmüller and Vivienne Westwood.

2. Sexual fantasies with Marina Hoermanseder

In another room there is a walk-in installation with space for exhibits from over 60 Austrian designers.

An absolute highlight is the fashion designer Marina Hoermanseder, known from TV formats such as "Austria’s Next Top Model". The Berlin-based label combines detailed craftsmanship with exceptionally elegant designs.

A hallmark of Hoermanseder is the combination of unconventional cuts with fetish elements. Details such as leather straps, buckles, ruffles and rivets should not be missing.

The pieces of the French-Austrian designer show a strong reference to sexual practices. For this reason, Hoermanseder started a cooperation with the sex toy label Amorelie in the winter of 2019.

3. Sustainable Fashion by Natalie Zipfl

The designer who is born in Vienna studies, after completing her training at the Hetzendorf fashion school, women's fashion at Central Saint Martins in London.

While she’s still a student, the young artist can present her creations at an exclusive event by LVMH Moët on sustainability concepts in the fashion and textile industry.

The designer works with unusual materials such as pig blood and gelatin, as these are compostable and therefore sustainable. Her thesis corresponds to a personal childhood trauma and the question of whether human decisions are made in order to feel loved and accepted.

4. Between jewelry and art

Another highlight is the label Florian Jewelry. The internationally known jewelry designer Florian Ladstädter initially studied metal design in Vienna and philosophy in Munich when he discovered his love for jewelry and body sculptures.

The objects are eccentric and effervescent, but nevertheless of insane beauty. His creations offer both wearer and viewer a wonderful interplay of color, size and opulence.

The label has already been photographed for international magazines such as i-D, Dazed & Confused and the Japanese Vogue. The extravagant jewelry objects are available in selected shops around the world.

5. The Tyrolean who went to London

Another jewel of the exhibition is the Tyrolean Andreas Kronthaler. The trained goldsmith studied industrial design with Carl Auböck. Kronthaler was already experimenting with sculptures, installations and sewing textiles during his studies. From the beginning, he financed his studies by selling fashion designs to local fashion shops.

While studying fashion in Vienna, the young artist got to know the successful Vivienne Westwood, who has had a great fascination for the Austrian since the beginning of her encounter. What unites the two is the precision and thoroughness of fashion cuts.

Westwood is enthusiastic about Kronthaler's talent and work and invites him to her studio in London, where he becomes her assistant and in 1992 her husband. Since then, the unusual couple (the two are separated by an age difference of 25 years) has created all of the collections together. They are strongly committed to issues such as environmental protection, peace and human rights.

The designer says of her husband: "He is the most talented person I have ever met."

The SHOW OFF exhibition at the MAK puts Austrian fashion designers in the spotlight and gives a great overview of a scene that is fascinating and surprising. One of the many findings after visiting the exhibition is certainly that in fashion, design meets handcraft, tradition meets unconventionality and imagination meets reality. Because not only the personal highlights mentioned above, show that fashion can do everything and is everything. In Christian Dior's words: “Fashion comes from a dream world. And dreams are the salvation from reality. "

Convinced? - The exhibition can be seen until August 30th in the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna.
