Every year, countless oysters end up in the trash at the city’s seafood restaurants after being eaten - and it’s important to note that it takes years for an oyster to reach a stage where it can be consumed. Their beauty, simplicity, and, above all, their durability remain underappreciated. But that’s all changing now, because Austerngold takes these shells and transforms them into exquisite jewelry and decorative objects. Each piece is one-of-a-kind. First, they are collected from restaurants, each one thoroughly cleaned by hand, boiled, dried, and then primed. Next, motifs are cut out by hand from high-quality thin papers, such as tissue paper, and artfully applied. After sealing and adding a golden accent, the back retains its natural beauty.
Born out of a pandemic-induced lull, the artist set out in search of the right idea to highlight the elegance and uniqueness of these shells. Now, motifs are sought out in the world’s most exclusive stationery shops to transform the oyster shells into sustainable decorative pieces and further emphasize their natural beauty. In the Vienna studio, a new fusion of indulgence, craftsmanship, and design is thus created. An everyday product is elevated-not only as an aesthetic object, but as a statement: an appreciation for the material, for the form, for the life cycle.
